How to read a Daikin furnace serial number

Daikin sells two very different kinds of equipment. Its ducted systems built in Houston (furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, air handlers and packaged units) use the Goodman family serial, which starts with the year and then the month. Daikin ductless mini-splits and VRV systems, made by Daikin Industries, don’t carry the date in the serial, so read the MFG. DATE on the plate instead.

    Example: 0107415182 (Goodman) was made in July 2001. Goodman, Amana and Daikin ducted serials start with the year and month: "01" is 2001 and "07" is July.

Not decoded yet: Daikin ductless and VRV units don't encode the date in the serial; use the MFG. DATE on the plate. Older dashed Amana serials are not decoded.

Where to find the serial number

Turn the furnace off at its switch, then remove the upper access door (the burner or blower compartment). The rating plate is on the inside wall of the cabinet or on the back of the door.

The plate lists the model number and serial number; many newer plates also print a date of manufacture.

Questions

Does a model number starting with D mean the unit is a Daikin?
Usually, on furnaces (DM96VC), outdoor units (DX14SA, DZ14SA) and packaged units (DP14). The exception is Goodman’s DSXC and DSZC outdoor units, where Goodman’s service manual defines D as “Deluxe Goodman”. Daikin-branded air handlers can also carry the shared A-prefix models, such as ARUF.
My Daikin serial starts with a letter. Why isn’t it decoded?
The Houston-built ducted serial is all digits, so a letter-first serial is a different format. On ductless units the date isn’t in the serial: one documented Daikin plate pairs serial A000129 with a separate MFG. DATE of 2008-1. Daikin PTAC letter formats aren’t decoded yet either.
