How to read a Amana furnace serial number

The Amana heating and cooling equipment we decode is built by Goodman: an official Amana parts list states that the Amana trademark belongs to Maytag and is used under license to Goodman. These units use the Goodman serial, where the first two digits are the year and the next two the month. A 2013 CPSC recall of Amana packaged units, for example, lists serials starting 1206 through 1210 on units sold June through October 2012.

  • Year + month (all-numeric)

    Example: 0109145052 (Amana) was made in September 2001. Goodman, Amana and Daikin ducted serials start with the year and month: "01" is 2001 and "09" is September.

Not decoded yet: Daikin ductless and VRV units don't encode the date in the serial; use the MFG. DATE on the plate. Older dashed Amana serials are not decoded.

Where to find the serial number

Turn the furnace off at its switch, then remove the upper access door (the burner or blower compartment). The rating plate is on the inside wall of the cabinet or on the back of the door.

The plate lists the model number and serial number; many newer plates also print a date of manufacture.

Can you date an older Amana serial with a dash after the first two digits?
No. Industry references describe that dashed style as an older Amana format from before Goodman built Amana equipment, and it doesn’t include a month. We don’t decode it.
Does a model number starting with A mean the unit is an Amana?
On furnaces, outdoor units and packaged units, yes: A is Amana’s brand letter, as in AMVC96, ASZ16 or APG14. On air handlers it isn’t: there A means “air handler”, and models like ARUF and AMST are sold under Goodman, Amana and Daikin.
