How old is my Tempstar furnace?

How to read a Tempstar furnace serial number

Tempstar is an ICP brand, and several of the plates that confirm the ICP serial layout are Tempstar units. The newest, a Tempstar furnace with serial A154116798, prints DATE OF MANUFACTURE OCT 2015; its serial reads year 15, week 41. We haven’t found a dated ICP-family example newer than that, so later Tempstar serials are assumed to follow the same layout.

  • Plant letter + year + week (1988 onward)

    Example: A154116798 (Tempstar) was made in October 2015. ICP serials (Heil, Tempstar, Comfortmaker, Arcoaire and others) start with a plant letter ("A"), then two digits for the year (2015) and two for the week (41).

Not decoded yet: Serials shaped like 4 digits + letter + 5 digits are not decoded: sources disagree on whether the year or week comes first. 1970s–80s letter formats are also not decoded.

Where to find the serial number

Turn the furnace off at its switch, then remove the upper access door (the burner or blower compartment). The rating plate is on the inside wall of the cabinet or on the back of the door.

The plate lists the model number and serial number; many newer plates also print a date of manufacture.

My Tempstar serial is four digits, a letter, then five digits. Why isn’t it decoded?
The one inspector reference that describes it contradicts itself: it reads a Tempstar sample, 9414B39332, as year then week, but reads the identical shape on Arcoaire and AirQuest as week then year. With no dated plate to settle it, we leave it undecoded rather than risk a wrong date.
Does an N at the start of the model number mean Tempstar?
No. A Tempstar product data sheet says “N = Tempstar”, but an ICP Commercial spec sheet for the same kind of unit says “N = ICP Commercial”, and N-series models are listed on every ICP brand site. Some models, such as the T5H8T, appeared only on Tempstar’s site when we checked.
Can you date an older all-digit or letter-coded Tempstar serial?
Not yet. One inspector reference describes older Tempstar and KeepRite styles: an eight-digit serial and several year-letter formats. No second source confirms them, and the eight-digit style can’t tell the 1980s from the 1990s, so we don’t decode them.
