How to read a Comfortmaker furnace serial number

Comfortmaker is an ICP brand, and two of the oldest plate-confirmed examples of the ICP serial layout are Comfortmaker units from 1992. R921500600 has MFG. DATE 04/92 printed on its plate, and R920500318, a furnace, reads 01/92. In both, the digits right after the letter are the year (92), followed by the production week.

  • Plant letter + year + week (1988 onward)

    Example: R921500600 (Comfortmaker) was made in April 1992. ICP serials (Heil, Tempstar, Comfortmaker, Arcoaire and others) start with a plant letter ("R"), then two digits for the year (1992) and two for the week (15).

Not decoded yet: Serials shaped like 4 digits + letter + 5 digits are not decoded: sources disagree on whether the year or week comes first. 1970s–80s letter formats are also not decoded.

Where to find the serial number

Turn the furnace off at its switch, then remove the upper access door (the burner or blower compartment). The rating plate is on the inside wall of the cabinet or on the back of the door.

The plate lists the model number and serial number; many newer plates also print a date of manufacture.

Is the first letter of a Comfortmaker serial the month?
No, although some inspection charts say so. The plates don’t agree: R921500600 prints MFG. DATE 04/92, and R isn’t a month letter in any of those charts. We treat the letter as the plant code, as the plate-confirmed examples show.
What does E072514528 mean?
E is the plant, 07 is the year and 25 is the week: the 25th week of 2007, around June. An inspector reference shows it on the data tag of a 2007 Comfortmaker air conditioner.
Why doesn’t my older Comfortmaker serial show a date?
According to industry references, some Comfortmaker units from before 1991 have serials that don’t contain a date at all. Those plates print a separate MFG date, and that’s the date to use.
