Trane and American Standard have used three date formats. From 1983 to 2001 the serial starts with a year letter; from 2002 to 2009 with a single year digit; since 2010 with a two-digit year. The production week always follows.

The same rules apply to American Standard furnace, AC and heat pumps.

Outdoor units: the rating plate is on the side of the cabinet. Many Trane plates also print a MFR DATE, which is the most reliable date.

Furnaces: the label is inside the blower door.

17 is 2017 and 10 is the 10th production week, early March. That unit's plate reads MFR DATE 3/2017.
My serial starts with a letter. How old is it?
It's likely from 1983–2001. Trane's year letters aren't alphabetical: for example S is 1986, R is 2000 and Z is 2001.
How can a serial starting with 2 be from 2002 or the 2020s?
2002–2009 serials are 9 characters with a single year digit; 2010-and-later serials are 10 characters with a two-digit year. We use the length to tell them apart.
