How to read a Payne heat pump serial number

Payne is one of the brand names a Carrier class-action settlement lists for furnaces made by Carrier Corporation, alongside Carrier, Bryant and Day & Night. Payne serials follow the Carrier-family rule: the first two digits are the production week, the next two the year, then a plant letter and a five-digit sequence. That settlement’s notice is also the earliest firm evidence for this format.

  • Week + year, plant letter, sequence (1988 onward)

    Example: 3203E08663 (Payne) was made in August 2003. In Carrier, Bryant and Payne serials the first two digits are the week (32) and the next two are the year (2003). The letter after them is the factory.

Not decoded yet: Pre-1988 Carrier, Bryant and Payne formats (month letters, week + year letter, all-numeric) are not decoded because sources disagree.

Where to find the serial number

The rating plate is on the outdoor unit, usually on the side or back of the cabinet near the electrical disconnect.

The indoor air handler has its own plate and its own serial number, so check which unit you're decoding.

What’s the oldest Payne serial you can date?
The settlement notice says furnaces with serials beginning 4988, 5088, 5188 or 5288 were made in December 1988, so a serial starting 4988 is week 49 of 1988. Earlier Payne formats aren’t decoded because the references disagree about them.
What if my newer unit says WeatherMaker instead of Payne?
Payne’s website now says Payne is WeatherMaker by Carrier. WeatherMaker units are read with the same Carrier-family serial rule, so you’ll get the same result whichever of the two names you choose.
How can I recognize a Payne model number?
Payne’s spec sheets start the model with P and a product letter: PG for gas furnaces (PG8…, PG9…), PA for air conditioners and PH for heat pumps. Some Payne packaged-unit numbers, such as PA5Z and PH5Z, are also sold by Bryant.
