How to read a Nordyne furnace serial number

Nordyne built the furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps sold as Intertherm, Miller, Frigidaire, Maytag, Gibson, Westinghouse, Broan and more, and Rheem bought its parent, Nortek Global HVAC, in October 2024. Their 12-character serials put the year in the 4th and 5th characters and the month in the 6th and 7th: Nordyne’s own warranty lookup lists B6D130407356 as made on April 10, 2013.

  • Plant/product + year + month + sequence (about 1989 onward)

    Example: B6D130407356 (Nordyne) was made in April 2013. Nordyne serials are 12 characters: the 4th and 5th are the year and the 6th and 7th the month, so "13" is 2013 and "04" is April.

Not decoded yet: Rheem-built plates marked "Manufactured for Nordyne", older Frigidaire/Philco/Westinghouse serials ending in a year and month letter, 1970s Westinghouse serials, Mammoth and Reznor commercial units, and anything before these brands used the Nordyne format.

Turn the furnace off at its switch, then remove the upper access door (the burner or blower compartment). The rating plate is on the inside wall of the cabinet or on the back of the door.

Questions

Does this cover mobile and manufactured home furnaces?
Yes, for Intertherm, Miller, Broan and Medallion units with the 12-character serial. Nordyne’s 2006 bulletin to manufactured-housing distributors refers to products with “serial date codes of 0602 and after”, which is February 2006 in this format.
Why isn’t my older Frigidaire, Westinghouse or Maytag serial decoded?
Those names were on other companies’ equipment before Nordyne made it: we decode Frigidaire, Westinghouse, Gibson, Kelvinator, Philco and Tappan from about 1998 and Maytag from 2002. Older styles, such as serials ending in a year and a month letter, have conflicting sources, so we leave them undecoded.
Is a plate marked “Manufactured for Nordyne” decoded the same way?
Not necessarily. Some early units were built by Rheem and carry Rheem’s serial format instead, so we don’t read them with the Nordyne rule.
