How to read a International Comfort Products heat pump serial number

International Comfort Products (ICP) lists Heil, Tempstar, Comfortmaker, Arcoaire, KeepRite and AirQuest among the brands it makes, and their modern serials share one layout: a plant letter, two digits for the year, two for the week, then a five-digit sequence. Plates with a printed manufacture date confirm it from 1992 through October 2015. No newer dated example has turned up yet, so later units are assumed to follow the same layout.

  • Plant letter + year + week (1988 onward)

    Example: E084103840 (Tempstar) was made in October 2008. ICP serials (Heil, Tempstar, Comfortmaker, Arcoaire and others) start with a plant letter ("E"), then two digits for the year (2008) and two for the week (41).

Not decoded yet: Serials shaped like 4 digits + letter + 5 digits are not decoded: sources disagree on whether the year or week comes first. 1970s–80s letter formats are also not decoded.

Where to find the serial number

The rating plate is on the outdoor unit, usually on the side or back of the cabinet near the electrical disconnect.

The indoor air handler has its own plate and its own serial number, so check which unit you're decoding.

Is there an official source for the ICP serial format?
The closest is a 2005 CPSC recall of ICP packaged gas/electric units. It gives the affected production period in weeks (week 41 of 2000 to week 26 of 2003) and shows a typical serial in this letter-plus-nine-digits shape. The rest of the evidence is plates that print their own manufacture date, plus inspector references that agree with them.
Is Day & Night part of this family?
ICP sells Day & Night today, but older Day & Night units were Carrier-built and use Carrier’s week-then-year serials, which we decode with the Carrier rules. Newer Day & Night serials in ICP’s letter-plus-nine-digits layout aren’t decoded yet: we have only one dated example, and its photo doesn’t show the brand.
Can the model number tell me which ICP brand I have?
Not reliably. ICP’s brand sites sell the same model under several names: the C5H8T outdoor unit is listed by Comfortmaker, KeepRite and Day & Night, and N-series models appear under every ICP brand. The serial rule is the same whichever badge is on the unit.
